Manipulating expressions is one of the first steps to solve quadratic equations. Because there are several methods to solve them, the form in which a quadratic is written may make one method easier than another. The simplest way to solve a quadratic is by using a method called **inspection**. Inspection literally means to look at the problem and know the answer. It sounds kind of Zen. It's not necessary to be one with the universe to make this happen; just remember the basics of algebra.

A slightly more difficult example is *x*^{2} = 5. The universe might take a bit longer to process this one, but it still sends the answer back without any work from us.
